Leonard gave his occupation as Public School Teacher when he enlisted 24 June 1915 and his next of kin his wife Mrs Mary Banfield of 'Aldine' Melville Street Ryde, Sydney.

He had previously served 8 years in the A.I.R. and 21st (Woollahra) Infantry and three and a half years in 2nd Regiment V.I. NSW. Leonard served in the 18th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Ceramic' 25 June 1915.

Captain Leonard John BANFIELD was Killed in Action on 22 August 1915 at Gallipoli Turkey age 40.
